Playing on its strengths, the chic London enclave of Eccleston Yards welcomed an elegant new restaurant this week called Cornus, from the duo behind Medlar in Chelsea. Naming their project with the botanical appellation for the native dogwood shrub, David O’Connor and Joe Mercer Nairne bring decades of experience to the revitalised warehouse district in Belgravia. They’ve created a bright, art-filled setting for chef Gary Foulkes, whose hand-rolled spaghetti and roast chicken are elevated with British delicacies like Scottish langoustines and lobster.
Located atop the Ice Factory, the space benefits from wraparound floor-to-ceiling windows that offer boundless, unobstructed natural light – views through sheer curtains extend across central London. The dining room was designed by Day Studio from the shell of an 1830 warehouse and features a rich palette of midcentury woods, muted greens, soft pink and marble. Bronze light fixtures above the banquettes create an amber glow at night. Bold original art completes the picture.
Wine is a major focus for the team of wine director Melania Battiston, sommelier Lukasz Gorski and head barman Mario Aranquez. The offering—including an extensive by-the-glass list—showcases unique and premium vintages at their best quality, classic, fine wines and new varieties that Battiston has encountered on her travels. ‘There is a harmony between Gary’s elevated menu and the unique wine offering from Melania that comes to life in this light-filled rooftop,’ says O’Connor.
