The moody darkness of El Malo, a new cocktail lounge in the historic Atlanta Dairies, could hide a multitude of sins. Instead, it does the opposite, playing up even the dimmest corners with interest and visual effects. Designed by Square Feet Studio, the space is a rich sensory experience, layering rich colours and materials to create depth, interest and emotional response.
The mood begins at the entrance, where double doors panelled in patina’d metal open to a long, narrow hallway cast in a red glow from fluorescent tubing mounted behind metal mesh. Visitors are deposited in a large room defined by two custom-designed columns, created in collaboration with Scott Silvester of ALKMY. The columns are deco in style, lit from within and strategically placed to frame the brass-rail bar. Around the perimeter of the space are deep banquettes in tactile leathers and velvets, and a mosaic-tiled DJ booth the colour of the deep sea.

Square Feet has recreated the columns behind the bar to complement the recessed lighting and swooping arch detail. All around is discreet recessed lighting, disco balls and sconces that throw just enough light on the cocktails and snacks. A more intimate niche behind a velvet curtain invites private conversation. Just as well-appointed, it has velvet panelled walls, a reflective ceiling and flooring with a subtle swirl effect, like the inside of a crystal.
