After the exciting return of skateboarding to the Olympic Games in Paris last summer, the city is more enamoured of the sport than ever. The auction house Sotheby’s is sustaining that momentum – not only with its staggering collection of collectable skateboards but with a line-blurring new exhibition and holiday sale, on until 20 December.
Curated by Sarah Andelman, co-owner of the dearly departed Colette boutique down the road, Attention, Fragile! showcases distinctive art and singular gift ideas with an extreme-sport vibe. Andelman has selected a compelling display of watches, handbags, ceramics and books, offset with work by Inès Mélia, Katerina Jebb, Andy Picci and others.
The event is located in the Salon, a luxury showroom on the upper floors of Sotheby’s new Faubourg Saint-Honoré flagship, redesigned by Architecturestudio. Last year, the architects transformed the building, which originally housed the Bernheim-Jeune gallery, in situ since 1925. The firm preserved the century-old architectural detailing but enhanced the quality of light from broad arched windows and a circular roof feature.
