London Fashion Week will settle into a new home this September: the art deco Brewer Street Car Park in Soho.
The event’s 62nd edition will take over two floors of the 1929 building, hosting catwalk shows and designer showrooms, as well as press and hospitality areas. Large parts of the Brewer Street Car Park, designed by architect JJ Joass, have been vacant for several years.
Caroline Rush, chief executive of the British Fashion Council, says: ‘This new and exciting venue has already been dubbed Brewer Street’s “Fashion Park” and will offer freedom and flexibility to designers who will be able to transform the show space to reflect their own aesthetics and identity.’
Brewer Street Car Park is currently playing host to an installation by Japanese artist composer Ryoji Ikeda – the latest in an ongoing programme of exhibitions in the building, which includes shows by Conrad Shawcross and Richard Mosse. The British Fashion Council has previously used the space for its International Fashion Showcase to exhibit 110 emerging designers from around the world.
Munira Mirza, London’s deputy mayor for education and culture, says: ‘With its position in Soho, it is at the heart of an area that has long been associated with fashion and creativity in general.’
London Fashion Week moves to Soho from Somerset House, which has held the biannual event since 2009.
