You can embrace your inner child at this historic castle estate in northern Scotland, which claims to have ‘Europe’s largest tree house’.

Ackergill Tower dates back to the 15th century and sits on the edge of Sinclair Bay near Wick. The storied pile was extended during the Victorian period by architect David Bryce and has been run as a wedding and events venue by its present owners since 2009. They restored the main castle and added guest accommodation across the 30-acre estate – listed with Knight Frank for £3.9m – including the wooden tree-house, which is wrapped around a 150-year-old sycamore tree.

The five-floor Scottish property has a whopping 32 bedrooms and 10 reception rooms, rich with period details including carved stone pillars and wood-panelled walls. The seafront estate also comes with the Smuggler’s Inn pub, six self-catering cottages, and a 200-person ceilidh hall in the former stables (the largest in the Highlands).

While it feels remote, Ackergill is just three miles from Wick Airport – which flies to Aberdeen and Edinburgh and has connections to London – and 15 miles from John O’Groats. The sale includes a lease for shooting and fishing rights over 3,000 acres of adjoining land.
