Estate agents and realtors love giving their listings quirky nicknames that capture the spirit or character of the property and make them stand apart. This Portuguese estate is located in the Alentejo countryside in Vimieiro and is nicknamed Hortus conclusus. If you’re not up on your Latin, that means ‘enclosed garden’, and it encapsulates the private nature of the Monte Alentejano.

The traditional farmhouse is for sale for €1.3m via WGP Advisors and sits on 1.8 hectares of land dotted with lemon and olive trees. But its sense of enclosure comes from its layout: living volumes encircle gardens at the centre of the property, completely hiding them from public view.

Living spaces extend across 500 sq m, and the interiors blend modern and traditional Monte elements—e.g., white-washed walls with terracotta, soaring vaulted brick ceilings, and exposed beams and rafters. The living room has a colossal open fireplace, and bright pops of colour come from furnishings and artworks.

Beyond the communal areas are four bedrooms and five bathrooms. Interior spaces are connected to the central gardens and the exterior terrace, which offers views of the surrounding countryside.

There’s also one more gem to be found at the Alentejo property – an intimate walled garden set around a fountain.
