When it comes to Californian modernism, Richard Neutra’s Lovell Health House is among the most important examples of the architectural oeuvre and was built with healthy living in mind. Now the seminal building is for sale.
Lovell House was built in 1929 for naturopathic health-guru Phillip Lovell who espoused the importance of exercise, diet and sunlight for a healthy lifestyle. Consequently, Neutra designed Lovell Health House as a machine for living, with numerous porches designated for nude sunbathing, and cubic living spaces drenched in light via huge steel-framed windows.
The striking Los Feliz property was a triumph and marked a turning point in Neutra’s career. It has been faithfully maintained by its owners, who’ve had Lovell House since the 1960s and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. However, it is showing its age and is in need of refurbishment.
Crosby Doe Associates, Ilana Gafni has the listing for Lovell House, which is asking $11.5m.
