Fifty years after Richard Neutra’s death, one of his earliest US projects, dubbed the Baby Grand Piano Studio, is for sale for the first time.

Neutra designed the Los Angeles property in 1936 for author David Malcolmson as a guest house for his mother-in-law, and it has been returned to its original condition.

Set in the Santa Monica Canyon, the pied-a-terre at 491 Mesa Road clocks in at just 523 sq ft but has expansive canyon views thanks to its curving wall of glass, which also overlooks a small terraced garden below.

It’s being marketed via Sotheby’s International Realty for $1.58m as a weekend bolthole or a studio space for creatives and is minutes from the beach and local restaurants.
