Sitting on a rugged stretch of land between the ocean and a mountain range in New South Wales, Magney House is one of Australia’s most celebrated residences… it even features on a postage stamp.

Pritzker Prize-winning architect Glenn Murcutt – the only Aussie to scoop the accolade – designed the trail-blazing passive home in 1984. Its most striking feature is its curving ‘butterfly’ roof which helps shade the building in the heat of summer and direct sun deep into its core in winter.

Magney House’s glazed north and eastern facades also help with climate control, capturing the sunlight while framing views of the surrounding landscape. The home sits within regenerating bushland (stocked with wallabies and kangaroos) on the fringes of NSW’s Eurobodalla National Park, and is a short walk from Bingie Beach.

The pavilion-like structure – available to rent via Airbnb – is carved into two mirroring wings which act as self-contained apartments, separated by a communal courtyard designed for barbecuing and outdoor eating.

Each wing has its own kitchen, dining and living space as well as bedrooms (two in the east side and two in the west), sleeping 10 in total.
