This house started life as a humble chickenshed before being transformed into a modern bolthole in the heart of the Welsh countryside.

Architects Hall+Bednarczyk took cues from the farm building’s original palette when turning it into a four-bedroom home. They replaced the original cladding with red cedar, while fitting a new corrugated roof in a nod to the building’s pastoral roots.

Wooden and steel beams are the dominating feature inside the open-plan living spaces, which open out onto the views. Polished concrete floors and furniture by contemporary design greats, including Dieter Rams, gives the house a modern feel.

Local Welsh designers have also been tapped. Blankets are by Ceredigion-based textile designer Jane Beck, while beds and the dining table are handcrafted by local designers Barnby & Day.

Chickenshed – which sleeps up to eight people – is sited between Monmouth and Chepstow.
