Via Unique Estates

Is the rat-race getting you down? This sprawling estate in the hinterlands of New South Wales’ Northern Rivers could be the remedy.

Carinya was built in the 1890s, and the four-bedroom farmhouse has undergone a top-to-toe renovation to turn it into a contemporary family home, blending old with new. The 200 sq m property sits at the heart of 108 acres of farmland and is wrapped in verandas where you can enjoy views of Mount Warning.

But rural doesn’t necessarily mean rustic. The Australian propertyon the market for $1.35 to $1.5m via Unique Estates – has contemporary interiors, with pivoting glass doors that tumble out onto the property’s grounds. Tassie Oak joinery and Blackbutt flooring bring a tactile touch to the open-plan living spaces.

In addition to the main residence, there are two guest cottages which could be used as a home studio or as potential holiday lets (there’s a swimming pool and full-size tennis court to entertain guests). The estate’s established hardwood plantation, which comes with harvesting rights, could also be an additional commercial interest.

According to the agents Gary Brazenor and Denzil Lloyd, Carinya’s elevated position and temperate microclimate make its rich soils suitable for cultivating a coffee plantation or simply for cattle grazing.

The country property at 119 Stanger Road in Stony Chute is about 12 minutes drive from the village of Nimbin, 40 minutes to Lismore, and 1.5 hours away from Byron Bay.
