Property of the week: an Amsterdam canal house ripe for conversion

Let your imagination run riot inside this Amsterdam canal house, which is primed for a new life and bursting with historic charm.

The five-storey Amsterdam property dates back to 1690, and sits on the Keizersgracht or Emperor’s Canal, next to the city’s FOAM Museum and Museum van Loon. It’s changed a bit over the last 300 years but there are period features aplenty inside its 17 rooms, including mouldings, high ceilings and fireplaces.

Its current owner has started the process of overhauling the building – on the market with PC22 for €7.95m – which had been divided into separate flats. They’ve renewed its foundations, as well as electrics, pipes, floors and even walls. Even so, there’s plenty of work left to be done converting it back into a single or double residence.

Luckily, there’s plenty of inspiration on site, including the star of the show – a parlour room that features a painted ceiling by artist Ernst Witkamp. Stone steps lead up the first-floor space, which has concertina shutters, towering sash windows that overlook the rear garden, as well as parquet flooring and an elaborate marble fireplace that offers a taste of old Amsterdam.

Down in the basement – which has its own entrance and can be accessed from the street – new foundations have been laid for a split room.
