Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos makes a splash with kaleidoscopic pool installation

Artist Joana Vasconcelos is set to make a splash in Edinburgh this August with her dazzling outdoor swimming pool, Gateway, which is set in the landscaped grounds of the Jupiter Artland Foundation.

Vasconcelos is Portugal’s most prized contemporary artist. Known for her exuberant sculptural installations that draw on ideas as varied as popular culture and socio-politics, she now heads up a Lisbon studio of 50 assistants.

Gateway reveals the artist’s dedication to reviving traditional skills and is her first permanent commission in Scotland. The swimming pool’s 11,500 ceramic tiles were made using traditional methods at a 100-year-old Portuguese factory, before being hand-painted and glazed with Vasconcelos’s bewitching design.
