Atelier Lavit has designed a rustic treehouse retreat that looks like a bird’s nest at Château de Raray in France.

‘Origin’ cabin is built around a 100-year-old oak tree in the grounds of the château – located a 45-minute drive away from Paris in the commune of Raray. Perched 13 metres above the ground, it has a latticed timber skin recalling the branches and twigs birds weave together to make their nests. Its walls are insulated with sheep’s wool.

Lavit’s treehouse is part of a cluster of elevated homes called Les Cabanes des Grands Chênes that are set in the woodlands around the Château de Raray golf course. Origin is designed for couples and is reached via a 30-metre long suspension bridge.

The cabin costs from €320 per night and spans 23 sqm. It makes clever use of space, housing a bathroom, bedroom and seating area. Interior walls, floors and ceilings are made from pale poplar, which releases a soft aromatic scent, and furnishings are custom-made by the practice, also out of wood.

An outside terrace creates space for al fresco dining, but guests can also make use of the château’s restaurant and bar.
