London’s Grade II*-listed Old War Office will be transformed into a five-star hotel and a set of private apartments.

Indian developer, the Hinduja Group, has bought the 1906 Neo-Baroque building for £350 million and revealed plans to breathe new life into the 580,000 sq ft Whitehall landmark, designed by architect William Young and his son Clyde Young.

The group’s global co-chairman GP Hinduja said the restoration and conversion of the building would remain ‘conscious of its unique heritage’.

As it stands, the seven-storey Old War Office has 1,100 rooms and more than two miles of corridors.

The building housed the British Army’s administrative offices until 1964 – during which it also served as a wartime HQ for Winston Churchill – before becoming a base for the Ministry of Defence.
