Wallpapers bloom with psychedelic flowers, and vintage curiosities peek out of every nook at this New Orleans hotel, which celebrates every style and era all at once.
Hotel Saint Vincent’s new role is a far cry from the red brick building’s former life as an infant asylum and home for unwed mothers, feeling more like a grand mansion than a 160-year-old orphanage. Its stately exterior is well preserved, but the rooms inside have been given a complete reinvention – now daubed in a palette of moody paint colours that clashes gloriously with marbled wallpaper and mosaic floors.
Hotel Saint Vincent offers more than its fair share of kitsch charm as well, thanks to objects sourced from nearby antique stores – including vintage corded phones, one of which is in each of the 75 rooms. Lucky guests will land themselves a suite with a private veranda, although each of the hotel’s rooms is unique.
Outside, there’s more than a hint of Palm Springs at the swimming pool, with its row of candy-striped loungers, while the Paradise Lounge wraps guests in a tropical mural. Those left with lingering admiration for the interiors can browse the tiny Hotel Saint Vincent guest shop, stocked with vintage watches and brass shrimp bookends, as well as essentials including toothpaste and swimming costumes. Rooms start at $184 per night.
