This Modernist property in Los Angeles was originally the home and studio of Disney animators Mary and Lee Blair and it perches at the top of a steep hill hidden among the trees.

Architect Harwell Hamilton Harris designed the wood-clad midcentury abode – on the market via Heidi Lake and Marc Silver of Sotheby’s International Realty for $1.895m – for the couple as their live/work space in 1939.

Huge windows and patio doors are installed across the two-bedroom Modernist Los Angeles property to make the most of its vantage point, and it also has several outdoor terraces.

While it’s exterior evokes a rustic treehouse, interiors of 3763 Fredonia Drive channel a mid-century vibe with wood-panelling, exposed brickwork, glass walls and tiled floors. The living room features a huge fireplace, while the master bedroom retains its original cabinetry.

Mary Blair was said to be ‘one of the all-time greats of Disney history and Modernist illustration and color’, while Lee won an Olympic gold medal for watercolour painting in 1932. Little wonder then that the 1,254 sq ft Los Angeles property – which is close to major studios – is being pitched as a serene ‘retreat for artists or those with a creative spirit.’
