Kaleidoscopic castle beloved by urban explorers lists for $18.3m in Tuscany

There’s a room for every day of the year at Sammezzano Castle in Tuscany, which has Moorish Revival interiors covered in thousands of technicolour tiles.

The hilltop home dates back to the mid-1800s and was a 40-year-long labour of love for its Marquis owner. Every single room follows a different design scheme and has its own name – such as the psychedelic ‘Room of the Peacocks’. The Tuscan property is surrounded by 65 acres of parkland and gardens.

Once a hotel, Sammezzano Castle – on the market with Coldwell Banker Bodini Barbera Real Estate for $18.362m – has been closed to the public since the 1990s but has become a cult location for urban explorers.

It’s being pitched as a commercial opportunity and was last purchased at auction in 2017 for €15m (and put back on the block last month). But it’s unclear if much work has been done to it since, suggesting interiors will still need careful restoration.
