The Gefter-Press House by architect and Columbia University professor Michael Bell delivers a lesson in transparency and tranquillity.

Everything is in plain sight inside the single-storey, 2,400 sq ft property – suitably nicknamed ‘Binocular House’ – in Ghent, Upstate New York. But privacy from the outside world isn’t a problem when your home is hidden within woodlands on a secluded 12.7-acre plot.

In creating the three-bedroom house, Bell drew inspiration from two other ‘transparent’ homes: Mies van der Rohe’s Farnsworth House in Illinois and Philip Johnson’s Glass House in Connecticut.

Bell’s Gefter-Press House – available for $1.95 million (£1.25 million) via Architecture for Sale – comes with the added bonus that every one of its double-glazed panels can slide open. Best to leave them closed when it’s snowing though…
