Architecture buffs can kick back inside this midcentury Florida home, designed by Mark Hampton.

Weaving House was built by the Sarasota School architect – an east coast counterpart to the Californian Modernist movement – in 1957. The Lakeland property’s current custodian is author and midcentury expert Andrew Weaving, who has faithfully maintained the time capsule home and now lets it out to Modernist aficionados as a holiday rental.

‘We bought it from the original family who commissioned it,’ says Weaving. ‘When we closed on the house, Mark Hampton came to see it and he couldn’t believe that it was so intact, we were very lucky.’

Terrazzo floors are used throughout the single-storey property, available to rent via Boutique Homes from $250 per night. Interior walls are a mix of walnut and grass cloth, and original stained glass screens divide shelving and dining areas. Furniture is all midcentury, with pieces from the original house mixing with vintage items collected by Weaving. Even the kitchen appliances are original.

The two-bedroom holiday home – which also comes with an outdoor swimming pool, designed by Hampton – is close to Lake Hollingsworth, as well as restaurants, and a farmer’s market.

Modernist enthusiasts can make a pilgrimage to the nearby Florida Southern College Campus, which has the largest concentration of Frank Lloyd Wright structures in the world. Surrounding towns are also dotted with the works of Hampton’s contemporaries, and Tampa is less than an hour’s drive away.
