Casa 1923 pairs contemporary design with 1920s excess in the Portuguese coastal city of Faro in the Algarve.
The townhouse is easily spotted from the road thanks to its intricately tiled Azulejo facade, which features checkerboard and floral patterns in mint, forest green and terracotta shades. From this angle, it’s a classic Portuguese design, but behind its carved double doors lies a completely renovated set of rooms, designed by PAr in a simple minimalist style that heightens the building’s art nouveau bones.
Casa 1923’s layout hasn’t undergone significant changes, but it has been updated throughout, with PAr favouring natural building materials and traditional techniques where possible. And the two self-contained apartments in the holiday home – bookable via HolidayArchitecture, with prices available on request – share the same white-walled, clean-line aesthetic.
Bedrooms retain original plaster mouldings, freshened up with a lick of white paint, and terracotta floor tiles keep things cool.
The Faro townhouse’s roof area has also been transformed and is now home to a secret pool and vegetable garden.
