Fashion mecca Dover Street Market has moved away from its eponymous London roots to a Grade II-listed building nearby on Haymarket.

The concept store’s new five-level site – originally built for Burberry in 1912 – provides three times the space of its previous home. Its opening also introduces a high-end retail offering to Haymarket, which is better known for its theatre, bars and clubs.

Comme des Garçons creative director Rei Kawakubo, who conceived the idea behind Dover Street Market, designed the new space, including its common areas, changing rooms and some of the installations that dot the store.

‘I want to create a kind of market where various creators from various fields gather together and encounter each other in an ongoing atmosphere of beautiful chaos – the mixing up and coming together of different kindred souls who all share a strong personal vision,’ said Kawakubo.

Her installations include the ground floor’s Dover Street Market hut, made from wood and corrugated iron and the first-floor lighting, comprising clusters of long LEDs dropping from the ceiling in a work called ‘Frozen Waterfall’.

Alongside these modern interventions to the space, the creative director also left the building’s exterior, ceilings, windows and grand central staircase untouched.

Brands with their own space within the store were allowed to design their patch as they saw fit. Jeweller Repossi, for example, enlisted the help of architect Rem Koolhaas’ OMA and AMO design teams while milliner Stephen Jones created a structure of interlocking chairs to display his pieces.

Lighting designers Thierry Dreyfus, Daniel Young, Christian Giroux and Pedro Cabrita Reis were also brought on board to create illuminating installations for the space.

Just as in the previous store, Rose Bakery also finds a spot in Dover Street Market on the top floor of the building.
