A midcentury office building designed by World Trade Center architect Minoru Yamasaki is about to go under the hammer in Detroit.

The American Concrete Institute Building was constructed in 1958 in the northwest of the city, and was designed to show the capabilities of the versatile material. It features a zig-zag, saw-tooth roof and arched glass façade. The building takes on a lantern-like glow when illuminated at night, thanks to it’s perforated side walls.

Set over 10,476 sq ft, the building at 22400 W Seven Mile Road is in good nick and is partially leased for $54,000 a year (the tenant recently renewed).

Yamasaki designed the original World Trade Center, including the tragically ill-fated Twin Towers. He worked in the Detroit area for over 40 years, producing many midcentury landmarks including his first sky scraper for the Michigan Consolidated Gas Company and the city’s McGregor Conference Center.

Tranzon is auctioning the midcentury building online. Bidding opens on 20 July and closes on 27 July, with Tranzon promising it will sell to the ‘highest bidder, regardless of price’.
