Connecticut home designed by a Frank Lloyd Wright protégé asks for $2.5m

Architect Allan J Gelbin designed this three-bedroom Connecticut home, which bears the hallmarks of his time as an apprentice of Frank Lloyd Wright.

Gelbin designed the Wilton home in 1961 after cutting his teeth in the offices of Wright’s Taliesin campus, where he worked until 1953. (Wright died in 1959, at the age of 91.) Gelbin had supervised the construction of three of Wright’s residential commissions in Canton, OH, and New Canaan, CT. After branching out on his own, he continued to spread Wright’s ideas of organic architecture and modern design across the northeast region, particularly in Connecticut, where he would go on to make his own home.

This Fairfield County property is sited on a waterfront plot and has been meticulously renovated by SkyView Builders to modernise it while retaining Gelbin’s key midcentury modern details. It has a free-flowing open layout with expansive windows, a ton of original woodwork, and a massive corner fireplace in the living room. (There are also two further family rooms within the 3,035 ft spread.)

Wright’s kitchens were notoriously an afterthought, an oversight that trickled down to some of his students. But there’s no such issue at Deer Run Road as the kitchen (which opens onto an outdoor patio with extensive stone work) has been comprehensively modernised and upgraded with custom wood cabinetry and a large island.

Other upgrades include the installation of a NativeStone soaking tub in the primary suite bathroom, a heated gunite pool with a built-in spa, and an office/home studio. The three-bedroom house also has private lake access, a whole-house Generac generator, and an EV charger.

Kimberly Burke of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices holds the listing for the modernist Connecticut property, asking $2.5m. It comes with a 2.6-acre plot landscaped with two patios, a wildflower lawn, and steps down to the water’s edge.
