A converted church in Bath boasts gallery-like interiors and colourful stained glass

Minimalism meets Victorian

Dazzling stained glass bathes the interior of this converted church in Bath in colour and light.

The Victorian chapel, an architectural gem dating from 1881, was converted into a five-bedroom home by its current owner, who was drawn to the ‘theatrical’ spaces of the church and its dressings—including decorative windows, soaring volumes, original floor tiles and inscribed buttresses.

Most elaborate of all is the large round stained glass window at the front of the converted church, which has original tracery fitted with stained glass. Colourful panes were designed by students of Bath City College in 1990 and show celestial scenes and seabirds.

Living spaces span an impressive 3,500 sq ft, and the church home has been modernised with secondary glazing, under-floor heating and a bespoke kitchen by cabinetmakers Shaker and May. Designed for function as well as entertaining, its open to the living space and features a large island and Lacanche stove.

A minimalist, gallery like-feel unifies the interior though there are plenty of unique spaces to be discovered, from cosy snugs to a mezzanine-level study, which looks out over the ground floor and runs beneath the striking stained glass windows.

Inigo is listing Claremont Chapel for £1.85m. The Bath property is close to the city centre—Somerset’s UNESCO World Heritage site, fabled for its Roman and Georgian architecture, all of which is on the doorstep.
