Within 50 acres of lush Cork countryside is a historic marvel: the 500-year-old Carrigacunna Castle, which blends medieval ruggedness and Georgian elegance. Now, the handsome restored property is for sale for €2.7m.

Carrigacunna Castle features a medieval tower, built in the early 1500s by the powerful O’Keeffe clan. Ireland was marked by fierce clan rivalries during this period which spurred the construction of defensive military structures like the tower. The O’Keeffes—who were known for their staunch resistance to Tudor encroachment—built theirs as both a fortress and a symbol of the family’s status.

Adjacent to the medieval towerhouse is a Georgian manor dating from to the 1750s. This principal residence was greatly expanded and remodelled in 1826. More recent renovations in 2003 preserved its historic features, including intricate plasterwork and timber details. At this time, a modern glass extension was also added, contrasting old with new, and capturing panoramic views over the Blackwater River below.

Breaking from the historic, the current owners have also added a contemporary pool complex, converted from the old stable yard. This addition maintains the aesthetic integrity of the original structure.

In recent years, Carrigacunna Castle has been a successful wedding venue, thanks to its impressive 7,585 sq ft of living space, including four reception rooms, three-bedroom suites, four bathrooms, and a one-bedroom apartment. Its expansive 50-acre grounds feature ancient woodlands, formal gardens, and rolling lawns, with striking views of the Blackwater River and surrounding mountains. There is also a smattering of outbuildings and structures across the estate.

Carrigacunna Castle is around 30 minutes from Cork City and offers the opportunity to own a rare piece of Irish history. Fiona Waldron, Senior Property Negotiator at Auctioneera holds the listing.
