California modernism doesn’t get much better than this Palm Desert home by S Charles Lee

It’s got mountain views, soaring palms and access to a golf club

This Rancho Mirage home near Frank Sinatra Drive in the Palm Desert captures a particular moment in California modernism, shaped by sculptural forms, desert light and the ease of indoor–outdoor living. Currently listed for $1,395,000 with Desert Sotheby’s International Realty, it was designed in 1972 by S Charles Lee for his own family and has the unfettered views that come with close proximity to a golf club (residents get direct gate access to Tamarisk Country Club).

Lee grabbed a corner lot, directly behind an extended private drive framed by palms and the mountain panorama. The atmosphere is calm, sun-washed and distinctly tied to the Coachella Valley.

Inside, the 3,116sqft layout reveals Lee’s late-period detailing, including Elrod-inspired wall cutouts and original raked stucco across the foyer and living room. Floor-to-ceiling glass draws the desert directly into the home, while soaring ceilings and an open plan prioritise space. Three bedrooms and three full baths are complemented by a media room that can convert to a fourth bedroom, plus a separate studio with its own entrance for guests or work. The updated kitchen and renovated primary bath introduce contemporary function while respecting the home’s architectural intent.
