Riverledge, a modernist house about 90 minutes outside Washington DC in the rural outskirts of Rixeyville, Virginia, counts itself as one of America’s first FlatPak Prefab Homes. Designed by pioneering architect Charlie Lazor, the three-bed, three-bath structure was assembled in 2007 from a system of colourful panels on a ledge above the Hazel River. It is currently listed for $1.2 million via Keller Williams Realty.
Lazor worked with the owners to design the 1,688-square-foot house on its wooded 32-acre lot. Stripped to its fundamentals, it has an open, un-fussy layout flanked by wide banks of glazing that integrate the interior with the lush surroundings.
The colour palette is a simple suite of neutrals and natural wood tones, with a contemporary wood-burning stove at the centre of the living area and blue-glass sliding doors closing off a home office.
More sliding doors opposite the front foyer open onto a deep deck that cantilevers over the ravine. Every room benefits from full-height windows onto the treetops – even the main bathroom. The effect is that of a luxury treehouse secluded from the wider world.
