An elegantly restored Charles Du Bois mid-century home lists in LA

The Woodland Hills ranch-style property underwent a top-to-toe update

Post-war architect Charles Du Bois designed this single-story Los Angeles property, which has recently undergone a sensitive refurbishment, preserving its mid-century charm while introducing modern updates.

The 1961  home is part of a midcentury subdivision Du Bois planned for developer Don-Ja-Ran Construction Co and Peerless Building Co in Woodland Hills, which encompassed 1,300 single-family residences and took several phases of construction, finally completing in 1964. The scheme built on the success of Du Bois’ earlier works, including his eponymous Charles Du Bois Residence (1954) and the modernist Weingart Stadium at East Los Angeles College (1957), comprising single and two-storey ranch-style homes like the one at 5300 Dubois Avenue.

The Woodland Hills residence was meticulously restored earlier this year and features all-new plumbing, electrical systems, HVAC, flooring, and lighting. The remodelled kitchen boasts European-style timber cabinetry and a striking marble-topped island. These contemporary elements harmonise with the home’s original Californian modernist details, such as the raftered ceilings and brick fireplaces, now painted dark charcoal.

The outdoor space has been transformed into a serene ‘zen’ garden, complemented by a swimming pool, a pergola with a BBQ area, a fire pit, and a putting green.

Four bedrooms are updated in a minimalist fashion, with the primary suite offering a spa-like bathroom and a walk-in closet.

The Los Angeles home is listed with Char Major and Candace Carroll of Sotheby’s International Realty – Los Feliz Brokerage for $2.495m.
