An artefact of Old Hollywood goes on sale in Laurel Canyon

It has serious indie cred

American New Wave pioneers John Cassavetes and Gena Rowlands lived in this 1940 house for most of their lives together, raising their children here and filming works like Minnie and Moskowitz, Opening Night and Love Streams. After Rowlands’s death last year, the 4,305 sqft home is now on the market for the first time in more than 60 years.

The address has since become part of Laurel Canyon’s so-called Celebrity Row — Lady Gaga and Will Ferrell are neighbours. But for a time this home served as a creative incubator where some of the most legendary films of the 1970s were conceived.

Set on three-quarters of an acre with a tree-lined approach and views over the canyon, it has five bedrooms and four bathrooms, wood-panelled living spaces and a sun room leading out to the garden. The classic bar-lounge and powder room are decorated in Old Hollywood style, the latter with a mural hand-painted by a family member. It’s currently listed with Compass for just under $5 million.
