An architect’s ‘butterfly’ home lists for $2.9m in Los Angeles

FIN Architecture founder Christopher Payne designed this four-bedroom ‘butterfly’ roof house as his personal home – and now the sculptural Los Angeles property is for sale for $2.9m.

The inverted roof is one of the Silver Lake home’s many distinguishing features, along with its multi-level outdoor terraces and stretches of glass with views across downtown LA.

Payne has used a plethora of full-length windows to connect balconies with indoor living spaces and the sloping form of the roof to create expansive living spaces. Concrete and cork floors, Caesarstone counters, white walls and wood panelling form the backdrop to views of the city and the canyons.

The primary bedrooms sit beneath high, vaulted ceilings, with the main suite connecting to a Japanese soaking tub and recessed shower. There’s also a live/work studio with a bedroom, bathroom and kitchen.

Tucked at the back of the Los Angeles property is an enclosed garden and lawn, with enough space for the whole family to stretch out in loungers. Compass has the listing.
