Mo de Movimiento takes sustainable design to new heights in Madrid, using construction waste and reclaimed wood to create its textured, eco-friendly interiors.

Lucas Muñoz has set a new standard for responsible design with the Madrid restaurant, which is located inside a cavernous space that was once a theatre and recording studio.

The designer used nearly 2,000kg of rubble to build Mo de Movimiento and is tricked out with eco-innovations, such as using the heat from its pizza ovens to warm water for the kitchen and washrooms. Other sustainable features include hanging terracotta pots that cool the air and collect water that’s redirected to the garden.

Muñoz prioritised existing materials as much as possible, turning timber from the site into stools and chairs and rewiring defunct fluorescent tubes with LEDs. It lends the space a rustic, unfinished feel which is emphasised by the rough plaster that covers the restaurant’s walls.

Guests can spot Muñoz’s repurposed objects everywhere, from radiators built using pipes to door handles made from Allen keys. Even the restaurant’s outdoor courtyard retains the original walls that once housed the studio – the designer simply took the roof off.

The sustainable philosophy continues in the menu, which prioritises small Spanish producers and organic ingredients. As well as pizzas fresh out of the oven, Mo de Movimiento serves plenty of Italian classics, including ravioli, parmigiana and carbonara.
