Fancy taking a break from the grind and spending three months living in the Italian countryside?
Airbnb has announced its expenses-paid Italian Sabbatical programme which offers four people the chance to become ‘temporary citizens’ of the village of Grottole in Basilicata.
The UNESCO World Heritage Site has a dwindling population of just 300 residents and the programme – which is packed with language lessons, gardening sessions, cookery classes and opportunities to explore the Basilicata countryside – shines a light on this overlooked area.
After learning about the town in the first month, participants will co-host events and volunteer at social enterprise Wonder Grottole, which seeks to revitalise the town centre and entice people to fill its 629 empty homes. Expenses are covered up to €900 per month and accommodation is free.
Interested? Applications close on 17 February.
