Ai Weiwei has draped the pillars of a Berlin concert hall with 14,000 used life jackets in response to Europe’s inaction over the Syrian refugee crisis.

The Chinese artist has been using his studio on the Greek island of Lesbos – set up last month – to gather orange life vests discarded by refugees reaching the coast.

Having amassed more than 14,000, Ai Weiwei has created the installation at the front of Konzerthaus Berlin – a concert hall rebuilt in 1984 after being destroyed during World War II. The original structure, called Schauspielhaus Berlin, was designed by architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel and built in 1821.

Ai Weiwei’s new installation is the artist’s latest effort to highlight the struggles of refugees. He recently cancelled an exhibition in Copenhagen in protest of a new law allowing authorities to seize valuables belonging to asylum seekers.

The artist has also been documenting his work with refugees on his Instagram account.
