A top LA architect refurbished this modern Silver Lake villa

Ash and hemlock line the walls and ceilings

Set above a quiet bend in Silver Lake, this cedar- and Boral-clad residence takes its cues from geometry, light and proportion. Reimagined in 2022 by Barbara Bestor of LA’s Bestor Architecture, the house unfolds as a sequence of carefully calibrated volumes that balance openness with privacy, framing views across the reservoir and surrounding hills while maintaining a distinctly inward calm. The result is an architectural response shaped by site, climate and neighbourhood. The house is listed for $5.25 million with George Penner Team of Compass.

Inside, ash and hemlock line walls and ceilings, paired with cement tile and ash flooring to create continuity across levels. A double-height glass aperture draws light deep into the plan, tracing a custom timber stair that links social spaces to private quarters above. Living and dining rooms open directly to terraced gardens, where a trellised pavilion, firepit and swimmer’s pool extend daily life outdoors. The kitchen is designed as a place for gathering, with a built-in banquette and oversized picture window oriented to greenery.

The 4,492sqft plan includes four bedrooms, five bathrooms and a flexible lower-level studio suited to creative work. Sustainability measures — including solar power, water collection and EV charging — are integrated discreetly.
