Set directly on the edge of Loch Alsh, Tulach Ard occupies a rare position between water and mountains on the northwest coast of Scotland. The Category B-listed manse looks across the tidal loch towards Skye’s misted munros, with ancient woodland rising immediately behind — a dramatic setting that shapes the architecture. Built in the mid-18th century and extended in the early 20th, the house has evolved in step with its landscape. It is currently listed for £825,000 with Inigo.

A sensitive restoration in 2012 reframed the eight-bedroom interior for modern use, opening formerly cellular rooms to capture long loch views and shifting light. A central staircase, attributed to Thomas Telford, anchors the plan, while ash panelling and flagstone floors establish a material language that echoes the surrounding forests and shoreline. Colour and texture are introduced through heritage paints, tartans and textiles by ANTA, the Scottish design brand founded by the current owners, lending warmth to the interiors without altering the underlying structure.

Beyond the main house, converted outbuildings include a one-bedroom annexe, a stone byre and a timber sauna positioned at the water’s edge. Five acres of gardens, woodland and former farmland frame the site, with Eilean Donan and the Skye bridge close by.
