Light streams through giant steel-framed windows into the kitchen of this Alentejo property – an old pasta factory built in the 1920s that could be converted into a boutique hotel or agritourism adventure.

The Old Pasta factory is on the outskirts of Arraiolos – one of Alentejo’s fabled medieval hilltop villages. It was initially part of a farm and converted into a pasta factory by a group of entrepreneurial wheat farmers to better use their crops. Its grand proportions stem from this industrial use, and it makes for a great event space, crowned by swooping arches with red concrete floors and towering ceilings.

Fantastic Frank is marketing the property for €1.1m, and it comprises twin warehouse spaces and the main farmhouse, with eight bedrooms. Two cottages and four large warehouses and outbuildings are also on the site, and a masterplan for the site envisaged a 12-bedroom guesthouse surrounded by gardens and a swimming pool. The warehouses, meanwhile, were slated for multi-use as a coworking space, gallery and restaurant – all approved by Arraiolos Town Hall.

Added perks include Arraiolos being a golden visa area. The region is becoming a go-to for tourism and immigration, thanks to its plethora of vineyards, hilltop towns and stunning beaches. Lisbon and the Comporta coastline are an hour and 15 minutes drive away, while the UNESCO heritage city of Évora is 20 minutes away.
