A 57-metre contemporary mosaic by Adam Nathaniel Furman, designer of exuberant furnishings and art, has been unveiled outside London Bridge Station, south of the Thames River. Designed and installed in collaboration with the London School of Mosaic, ‘In a River a Thousand Streams’ showcases 250,000 glass pieces in 28 colours. It is the school’s largest-ever commission.
The mural was built to last 150 years or more, with 21 million people destined to pass by each year. Its title references the Thames-adjacent location, where masses converge on the city via the public transit station, one of the oldest in Europe. ‘In a River a Thousand Streams’ also nods to the diverse cultures that shape London. The piece was fabricated and assembled over nearly two years with the help of 70 volunteers. It was delivered by Dr Silvie Jacobi, director of London School of Mosaic.
