A Baroque manor in the Wiltshire countryside asks for £3m

The Ivy goes big on period character and style

There’s so much to feast your eyes at this opulent Chippenham country manor, built in 1728 and dripping in high Baroque details and surrounded by four lush acres of gardens.

The Wiltshire property is known as The Ivy and is the main section of a Grade I-listed country manor built for eminent lawyer and MP John Norris in 1728. It has a distinctive H-shaped plan that spans 5,500 sq ft and boasts a litany of architectural flourishes, from its central entrance with ionic pilasters and triangular architrave to its symmetric wings with Roman arched gables, quoins, urn finials and dentils. Even the original drain pipes are decorated with an ivy motif.

It’s not shy on style inside, either. Reception rooms have intricate foliated mouldings and cornicing, and the stone chimneys have carved details too. The house has been extensively restored and updated with modern amenities. The drawing room and morning room are now an expansive singular space with tall moulded wall panels and fluted pilasters.

At the back of the house is the kitchen, which blends baroque and modern country flare: bespoke cabinetry, marble counters, a handsome fireplace, and a green Aga oven sets the scene.

An open-string staircase connects the first floors, where three main bedrooms are located. Two more bedrooms are located in the eaves of the house, with large dormer windows overlooking the award-winning gardens designed by Julian and Isabel Bannerman. They feature box topiaries, a lake, formal gardens and natural woodlands. There’s also a heated outdoor swimming pool.

Inigo holds the listing for The Ivy, with an asking price of £3m. Take a peek inside its colourful baroque rooms in the gallery above.
