New York’s Park Avenue Armory arts centre was made for feasts like artist Philippe Parreno’s H {N)Y P N(Y} OSIS show. Part palace, part industrial shed, the former military facility cries out for the unconventional – the type of works that couldn’t be mounted in a museum setting. And Parreno’s work is anything but ordinary.

The French artist has filled every bit of the building’s 55,000 sq ft Wade Thompson Drill Hall with sound, movement and light. ‘The architecture becomes semi-conscious,’ he says.

A self-playing piano, 27 flashing light sculptures and a soundscape devised by Nicolas Becker are among the array of works in the space. Parreno plays puppet master throughout all this, pulling the strings behind a scripted series of happenings.
