Artist Camille Walala has given an old bank in Ohio’s Cleveland a technicolour makeover to mark its new life as an art gallery and yoga studio.

Pop Life takes over an abandoned 1920s bank in Collinwood’s Waterloo Arts District that had been vacant since 2010. While its interiors retain elements of its former life, including original bank safes, the exterior is coated in one of Walala’s signature geometric designs, complete with a dazzling colour scheme that draws attention to the building’s historic bones.

The mixed-use creative space is the brainchild of Pop Life owner Jack Mueller. He’s renovating the building, which should be open before the end of the year and will also house a juice bar.

‘I’ve always been into street art; to me, it’s so inspiring,’ he says. ‘That’s what art is all about – it’s for everyone. It’s not supposed to be confined. So when I saw this building was for sale, it called me home.’

Pop Life draws together Mueller’s background in vintage furniture and art with his expertise as a yoga instructor. According to Cleveland.com, the gallery’s art offerings will favour the likes of Keith Haring, Victor Vasarely and Alex Grey, and will double as an event space.

Yoga sessions will also be offered on a ‘pay what you can afford’ basis.

‘There’s a lot of really creative things happening here,’ says Mueller. ‘It really feels like Cleveland is having its renaissance, and I’m excited to be a part of that.’
