The silvery hues of Mount Tai suffuses the interiors of this Shangdong hotel

Tai’an’s Cloud of Hometown Resort Hotel has transformed a group of crumbling homes and stone buildings into a grey-tinted retreat, located at the foot of Mount Tai in Shangdong.

Gad Line + Studio led the renovation, taking advantage of the houses’ views of the nearby mountain, as well as their elm-filled courtyards. The original walls have been refinished and turned into vast expanses of glazing – lending each of the hotel’s bedrooms an uninterrupted vista over the landscape.

The studio has decked out Cloud of Hometown Resort in soothing shades of grey, installing a silvery, slate-coloured palette that echoes the mountain – which has been a place of worship for thousands of years. Rattan chairs, deep pile rugs and vases of dried flowers offset the muted colour scheme.

Elements of the site’s past still remain in the hotel, from the stone walls of the reception to a sunken conversation pit made from what was once a pothole.
