Mexico City’s Hotel San Fernando is a jewel box of colours

Located in a 1940s apartment block, this Mexico City hotel emphasises its art deco details with a rich paint palette.

The 19-room boutique hotel is the latest addition to Bunkhouse Group’s portfolio, which already has outposts in California, Kentucky and Texas, where the Austin-based company opened a 1970s-inspired space in 2021. Hotel San Fernando follows this example.

Bunkhouse teamed up with Mexico City-based studio Reurbano to revitalise the midcentury building, leaning into historical influences gleaned from the surrounding La Condesa neighbourhood, which is famous for tree-lined avenues, regal art nouveau mansions and well-preserved art deco apartment buildings. Taking the building’s existing features as its starting point, including stained glass windows and metal entrance doors, Reurbano has dipped the hotel in vibrant jewel tones.

Communal areas feature pistachio walls, crimson velvet sofas, and patterned encaustic tiles, while bedrooms are dipped in salmon pink – with pink-and-red bathrobes to match. Even San Fernando’s outdoor terrace hasn’t escaped the paintbrush, decked out in a minty blue and emphasised by rattan chairs and rows of plants.

Much of the hotel’s furniture and design pieces are by local creators, and the theme continues in San Fernando’s on-site shop, which stocks design pieces by Mexican makers.

Rooms at Hotel San Fernando start from $320 per night, and the hotel is steps from the Parque México. Bunkhouse says it aims to ‘embody the Mexico City ideal of La Sobremesa, the stretch of time and conversation after the eating is finished, when the tablecloth is soiled and empty glasses outnumber full ones’.
