Known as Villa Åkulla, the 457 sq m property was designed by Sweden-based Canadian architect, Boris Culjat – an acolyte of Byker Wall architect, Ralph Erskine – and faces directly onto the water, with a carefully coiffured lawn leading down to the shore and jetty.

Culjat’s starting point was a small suburban dwelling, built in the 1960s. He was commissioned by local furniture dealers Ulla Aurell and Åke Petterson to vastly expand the property in the 80s, while improving its layout and maximising the light.

‘The primary conceptual considerations were open and inter-related spaces’, says Culjat, as well as ‘maximum contact with the spectacular surrounds and a simplicity of architectural expression’. The result is a series of interconnected boxes that open onto each other.

In 2008, Villa Åkulla underwent a major interior and exterior modernisation without compromising its key design features. It was fitted with a new Uniform-designed kitchen – equipped with stainless steel appliances by Miele – and with smart-home technology in the form of sound and lighting systems.

Gotland limestone and oak wood flooring are used throughout the nine-room home, and three large fireplaces form the focal point of the living room and study spaces.

The house comes with access to 89,767 sq m of water, perfect for watersports enthusiasts. And if you want to get your friends involved, the self-contained guest house has its own kitchen and living room, as well as an outdoor/indoor spa, steamroll and patio tub.
