This Gloucestershire home’s dramatic interior befits its creator and current owner: theatre designer Niki Turner.

Built in the 19th century as a cloth merchant’s villa, the Grade II-listed property near the rural town of Stroud recently underwent a refurbishment under Turner’s watchful eye.

She retained much of the 3,700 sq property’s original French Baroque features, including its mansard roof, Tuscan columns and ox-eye windows. The stage designer – who has also been working in property since being approached to convert a loft in London – opened up the house’s former billiards hall to create a double-height kitchen and dining area, with a skylight to illuminate the space. A mezzanine study sits just above the kitchen.

Between the kitchen area and a studio space at the back of the ground floor is a pared-back living room, with canted bay windows and period detailing on the high ceilings. The property also comes with a cellar, currently used for storage, while its upper two levels house five bedrooms and two bathrooms, featuring bespoke copper fittings designed by Turner.

A conservatory connected to the kitchen area leads to the garden, while a private driveway provides off-street parking.

The property is available to buy for £695,000 via The Modern House.
