Peek inside Jessica Chastain’s Gilded Age apartment

The historic home was previously home to Leonard Bernstein and retains its period glamour.

Opulence abounds at Oscar-winning actor Jessica Chastain’s 19th-century Manhattan apartment – now listed for $7.45m.

The Midtown bolthole has an impressive history. It’s located inside 205 West 57th Street, known as the Osborne, designed by architect James Edward Ware in 1885. No expense was spared on the building, and its lobby offers a snapshot of Gilded Age decadence, with glamorous period details including marble, mosaics, and glasswork by Louis Comfort Tiffany.

Chastain bought the apartment in 2015–its previous inhabitants include composers Leonard Bernstein and Adam Guettel – and she enlisted AD 100 designers Carrier and Company to renovate the 3,200 sq ft space.

The apartment’s period details include rich mahogany panelling in the living room and leaded glass transoms created by Tiffany Studios.

Oak parquet flooring runs throughout, as do soaring 14-ft-high ceilings. The parlour room has a carved oak doorway with period hardware and one of five wood-burning fireplaces that can be found across the four-bedroom Midtown spread, this one with a marble surround.

The library and dining room continue the Gilded Age grandeur, with more wood panelling and plaster crown mouldings, restored wainscoting and pocket doors. The eat-in kitchen has also been upgraded with a colourful custom central island, quartersawn oak cabinets and a rolling ladder.

Cathy Taub and Ellen Kapit of Sotheby’s International Realty hold the listing.
