The winter months are usually too cold to set foot in the sea, but a planned upgrade for Cornwall’s open-air Jubilee Pool Penzance could see people swimming all year round.

The triangular pool sits on the Penzance promenade, and is one of only a handful of sea lidos left in the UK. Built in 1935, it fell out of favour over the years as public bathing was replaced with package holidays, and by the late 1980s it had fallen into disrepair. In the 1990s, however, Jubilee Pool was given listed status, and in 2016, it reopened after a £3m restoration – regaining its lustre as one of UK’s most spectacular public swimming pools.

Now, London architecture firm Scott Whitby Studio is overseeing a revamp of the art deco lido, designing new buildings to fill in gaps in the promenade, and drilling a geothermal well which will allow a section of the pool to be heated. Currently, Jubilee Pool is open from May to September, but warmer water could get bathers swimming during the cold months as well.

Although the project has already received some funding from the EU, Penzance is raising more to complete the project.
