‘Everything you need, nothing you don’t’ is the philosophy of this scandi-style prefab cabin, which can be ordered as a one-person retreat or scaled up into a collection of off-grid holiday homes.
Nokken is the brainchild of interiors and branding studio Aylott + Van Tromp, who worked on several hospitality projects of their own before launching the cabin. Not just a piece of architecture, the founders describe Nokken as a ‘platform’ for people to launch retreats.
Aylott + Van Tromp have kept the cabins minimal on purpose, creating a simple architectural volume that allows new cabins and corridors to be easily stacked or ‘stitched’ on. Nokken can be ordered as a simple one-bedroom suite – price on request – but buyers can also create custom units, or work with the company to plan entire villages. They’re on-hand to advise on booking software, locks, wifi, transportation and power systems, drawing on Aylott + Van Tromp’s hospitality expertise.
The same level of attention has been paid to the cabins themselves, which are designed to function in either freezing cold or roasting hot weather – something the founders say was ‘no easy feat’. They achieved it using ecowool and wood pulp layering, which sits beneath the cabins’ stained larch cladding.
The interiors are also clad in wood, as part of Nokken’s emphasis on a natural aesthetic that reconnects visitors with nature. And if the scandi styling feels out of place, there’s a more golden-toned Mediterranean edition.
