DES Architects + Engineers have taken the fun of playground-style offices to the rooftop of a car park in Silicon Valley.

The two-acre High Garden – part of the under-construction Moffett Place campus that’s been leased to Google – comes with a basketball court, putting green, running track and bamboo-lined meditation area.

There are also quieter meeting and hang-out spots, as well as walking areas for less strenuous activities.

‘Tech employees have really driven the demand for more workplace amenities,’ said the firm, which used 20 species of grass and shrubbery to create the green space.

High Garden replaces 250 parking spots on the roof of a two-level car park, with views of the Santa Cruz Mountains in the distance. And according to DES, changing transport habits in Silicon Valley have made the project possible.

‘Although driving to work is still common, office employees are shifting towards alternative transportation options including bicycles and public transit,’ said the firm. ‘The campus also includes hundreds of electric vehicle charging stations and preferred parking for rideshare and carpool vehicles.’

Expect more of these rooftop parks in the future, with DES Architects + Engineers designing four additional projects of a similar nature.
