Five artists have created a retractable bridge in the German city of Duisburg for the 2015 Ruhrtriennale, an arts festival spanning the wider Ruhr region.
Titled ‘Nomanslanding’, the mechanised structure splits in the middle to create a 10-metre gap between two sides of the bridge – sited at a former rail harbour. When the two halves join up again, visitors are reunited inside its central dome, where sound effects begin to play in the dark space.
‘This walk-on installation is an attempt to bridge the divide separating us from strangers and to facilitate a meeting on common ground,’ says the team of artists, which includes Robyn Backen, Andre Dekker, Graham Eatough, Nigel Helyer and Jennifer Turpin. ‘A space is created with a unique atmosphere in which people may reflect with each other on history, memories and experiences.’
The Ruhrtriennale runs until 26 September.
